Auditions for 2016-2017 will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 (all ensembles) at MCC Performing Arts Center. Auditions for either brass or woodwinds may also be scheduled on May 14 if we are unable to accommodate all of the auditions on May 21. The Fifty-sixth Annual Young Musicians Competition Grand Prize/Scholarship Auditions were held on January 9 & 10, 2016 at Mesa Community College. YMC Winners’ Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2016.

Congratulations to Youth Symphony trumpet player, Viveca Lawrie. She will be soloing with MusicaNova Chamber Ensemble on Sunday, February 21 at 3:00 pm at Scottsdale Presbyterian Church (3421 N. Hayden Road). Come and hear her perform Handel’s Overture to Atalanta for Trumpet and Strings. Admission is free. Viveca was also selected as a semi-finalist in the High School Division of the National Trumpet Competition. The competition will be held this March at the Schwob School of Music in Columbus, GA. Good luck, Viveca!
Congratulations to all of the 2016 Young Musicians’ Competition Scholarship Winners. Congratulations to Bobae Johnson (violin) – Grand Prize Winner and Tamachi Goodson (cello) – Clotilde Otranto Prize Winner. They will be performing their concertos with The Phoenix Symphony at the Side-by-Side Concert on Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Phoenix Symphony Hall. Youth Symphony concertmaster, Bobae Johnson, was selected to perform with the Moscow Ballet’s “Great Russian Nutcracker” tour on Wednesday, Dec. 16, at Comerica Theatre. As an aperitif to the holiday classic, she will accompany a Moscow Ballet soloist dancing “The Dying Swan,” from Saint-Saëns’ “The Carnival of the Animals.”
The appearance is part of the tour’s “Musical Wunderkind” program highlighting young talents in the cities it visits. Congratulations, Bobae!
Brass players from all PYS ensembles are invited to perform the National Anthem at the Phoenix Suns v. Utah Jazz game on Saturday, February 6, 2016. If you are interested in attending, you may purchase discounted tickets.
