Conducted by professional musicians, PYS’s 6 Ensembles offer outstanding learning and performance opportunities.



The Fifty-sixth Annual Young Musicians Competition Grand Prize/Scholarship Auditions will be held on January 9 & 10, 2016 at Mesa Community College.  YMC Winners’ Luncheon will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2016.

Congratulations to the following PYS members on their outstanding performance at the Arizona Musicfest Young Musicians Instrumental Competition finals:

Congratulations to Youth Symphony violinist, Bobae Johnson.  Bobae recently won the 2015 Dorothy Vanek Youth Concerto Competition sponsored by the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra.  In addition to the $1,000 cash prize, she was invited to solo with the orchestra on April 10, 11 and 12.  She will be performing the third movement of the Saint-Saëns Violin Concerto No. 3 and is the first violinist to win the SASO youth competition.

Congratulations to all of the 2015 Young Musicians’ Competition Scholarship Winners.  Congratulations to Kathleen Wu (flute) – Grand Prize Winner and Brigit Fitzgerald (bassoon) – Otranto Prize Winner.  They will be performing their concertos with The Phoenix Symphony at the Side-by-Side Concert on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at Phoenix Symphony Hall.  CLICK HERE for the complete list of winners.

There is a significant amount of construction happening at Central High School.  The south parking lot is completely closed.  You will be able to drop students off next to the Fine Arts building (where we rehearse), and there is room to turn around.  Plan on parking in the north lot!
Remember that the high school is accessible ONLY if you are going north on Central Ave.

2014 Germany Tour

June 9-18, 2014
Musicians from Youth Symphony, Symphonette and Symphonic Winds toured and performed in East Germany.  Click Here to see pictures from the trip!

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Thomas Cockrell, a music professor and conductor at the University of Arizona, is the new conductor of the orchestra. Dr. Cockrell has been Keitaro’s mentor and has an extensive background in conducting and music education.  We are excited to welcome him to Phoenix Youth Symphony.

All auditions are in the afternoons/evenings.  Days vary as to what instruments and ensembles audition on which date; they are dependent on the availability of the conductors and adjudicators.  Auditions by appointment only.
