AUDITION FEE: $30 non-refundable (Applications sent after April 4, 2018 require a $5 late fee)

Audition results will be sent out by July.


Audition Requirements

ENSEMBLE PREFERENCE*: Must meet music level of difficulty and scale requirements for the first ensemble listed.
SCALES: All groups will be required to play scales as specified below. Scales need to be memorized and played in eighth notes (quarter note = 60).
EXCERPTS: Youth Symphony will audition on an excerpt and a solo work or movement of a sonata or concerto of their choice. They will be stopped at the judges’ discretion. Excerpts will be available on the website on April 5, 2018.

ALL GROUPS MAY BE ASKED TO SIGHT-READ.

PREPARED UNACCOMPANIED SOLO:
You MUST include on your application the name of the piece and the composer.

  • Youth Symphony, Symphonette Orchestra and Symphonic Winds: Piece is student’s choice (2 minutes), includes both fast and slow passages and show advanced techniques.
  • String Orchestra: Piece is student’s choice (2 minutes), should be comparable to Suzuki Book 3 or beyond, and demonstrate student’s technical ability and musicality.
  • Percussion: Solo for keyboard percussion (two or four-mallet, from the Texas UIL list).  http://wwwdev.uiltexas.org/pml/  (go to event code 502, keyboard percussion solo).

REQUIREMENTS:

YOUTH SYMPHONY (YS):
(Rehearses on Wednesdays, 6:30-9:15 pm; Ensemble fee: $595)

Ensemble Music Level of Difficulty: Performs music from the standard professional orchestra literature, which will be considerably more difficult than the normal high school repertoire and on par or above the difficulty level of a standard college orchestra. Musicians auditioning for Youth Symphony should already be at a high level of playing ability on their respective instruments.

  • Scales, Strings – All major and melodic minor, 3 octaves. 120bpm per note, no vibrato, even rhythm. No arpeggio.
  • Scales, Woodwinds & Brass – All major and melodic minor scales (2 octaves when possible) and chromatic scale covering entire range of instrument.

SYMPHONETTE ORCHESTRA (SYM):
(Rehearses on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 pm; Ensemble fee: $525)

Ensemble Music Level of Difficulty: Performs literature such as: Bizet L’Arlesienne Suite # 2, Berlioz Roman Carnival Overture, Saint-Saens Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah, and Dvorak Symphony #8

  • Scales, Strings – Up through 4 flats and 4 sharps, major & melodic minor, 3 octaves.
  • Scales, Woodwinds & Brass – All major scales (2 octaves when possible) and chromatic scale covering entire range of instrument.

SYMPHONIC WINDS (SW):
(Rehearses on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 pm; Ensemble fee: $480)

Ensemble Music Level of Difficulty: Performs literature from levels 4-6. Music includes works by composers such as: Balmages, Grainger, Hazo, Holst, Reed, RW Smith, Sparke, Tichelli, Van de Roost.

  • Scales, Woodwinds & Brass – All major scales (2 octaves when possible) and chromatic scale covering entire range of instrument.

STRING ORCHESTRA (SO):
(Rehearses on Wednesdays, 6:30-8:30 pm; Ensemble fee $480)

Ensemble Music Level of Difficulty: Performs literature mainly at levels 3-5.

  • Scales – up to 3 flats and 3 sharps. Major (2 or 3 octaves)

HARP, SCALES: All major scales and their natural minors, 2 octaves.

PERCUSSION: All ensembles demonstrate concert snare drum roll, Cymbal crashes and solo piece.

  • Youth Symphony – Excerpts for snare drum, mallets and cymbals.  Timpani etude (provided on website)
  • Symphonette & Symphonic Winds – Etudes for snare drum, timpani and auxiliary percussion (provided on website)

*CHAMBER WINDS: Brass and wind players who are placed in Symphonette, and the top wind and brass players who are placed in Symphonic Winds, will be invited to also participate in Chamber Winds. Presently the participation in this group is by invitation only and no additional fee is required.

Applications that are not FILLED OUT COMPLETELY will not be processed.

Your assigned specific audition time and day will be sent on May 1, 2018.
NO AUDITION TIMES WILL BE CHANGED AFTER MAY 7th – NO EXCEPTIONS!

Ensembles and instrumental sections vary morning/afternoon/evening.
